Information Needs Assessment

The Ivy Group collaborated with the library director in writing a LSCA Grant Application for conducting an Information Needs Assessment of citizens in Derry Township. This study was the foundation for a 5-year strategic plan for the library and for selecting technologies that were installed in the Hershey Public Library’s new facility.
The study incorporated interviews with community leaders and with school librarians and telephone interviews with library patrons and non-library users. The goal of the project was to gather data about information needs by subject, use of computers and information technology, and Internet access in three market segments including pre-schoolers and their parents, senior citizens and small businesses. The Ivy Group also collaborated with the staff of the library to field a second survey that measured the impact of the new technologies on customer satisfaction and the effectiveness of computer and Internet training classes that the library provided to community residents.
